Imagine a doctor refusing a beheading threat to save his patients. That's the story of Dr. Hossam Abu Safieh, a Palestinian physician captured by Israeli forces at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza in 2024.
He was treating bombing victims when troops repeatedly ordered him to leave—and threatened to sever his head.According to Al Jazeera and BBC reports, Dr. Hossam was detained without charges. He's been held in an underground isolation cell—cold, damp, without bedding, even in winter. Two years on, his health is critical: he's lost over 40 kilograms from deliberate starvation (just two spoonfuls of rice and a bit of bread daily). Symptoms include racing heartbeat, high blood pressure, vision problems, and skin diseases like scabies.
Add severe physical and psychological torture: four broken ribs from beatings, constant humiliation, and zero medical care.Amnesty International and other human rights groups highlight Dr. Hossam's case as emblematic of the crisis facing over 20,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
"This is systematic human rights abuse," states Amnesty's report through early 2026. His fading voice symbolizes medical resilience amid Gaza's conflict.
